Toxic Traits That are More Common Than You'd Think (Or Hope)

We've all met them. That person, friend, [or soon to be ex] that can only be described as one word....toxic. You may not notice at first, but once they open up, it comes spewing out like carcinogenic lava. Looking to melt into nothingness anything that stands in its way, knowing or unknowing. No matter what it is that's happening, these people seem to bring along with them drama, dismay, and despair. They thrive in the chaos. Hell, they bring the chaos. Let's look at some of the common toxic behaviors you have likely encountered with these folks, and maybe some you haven't:

1. Gaslighting friends into doing favors-"yessss, you totally said you'd do the reference page AND the content page of our group project. If you don't, I'll have to miss practice and won't be able to play this week, and then I'll get grounded!"

2. Constantly needing to be the victim-"omg I barely said anything to her and then she called me all sorts of names, in front of everyone, can you believe it?! I did nothing wrong!"

3. Sending "no update" updates to control conversations-"I know we were talking about your situation, but Johnny looked at me for 1.5 seconds today. Isn't that something?!"

4. Only helping others for social media likes-"here, let's post a selfie of me helping you clean out your garage. Aren't I the best of friends?"

5. Getting angry when others set boundaries-"what?! Are you serious?! I can't stop by for a ride to school anymore...20 minutes late even though you have an important class? How dare you!"

6. Always having a "better" story to one-up others-"omg that happened to me once, except my story is way better, listen..."

7. Pretending to be busy to avoid socializing-"nope, busy. Again. But you may notice me online because I have to keep up with the fans."

8. Blocking someone mid-conversation to "win" an argument-the ultimate f*** you. They probably get a kick out of watching the three dots come and go too.

9. Blocking then texting – knowing you’ll see but can’t respond-and they KNOW this will piss you off, it's likely why they do it.

This list is getting scarily toxic....how many of these have you encountered? The real question I have is how many of these traits do you possess personally? I think we all have a bit of toxicity in our behaviors, especially depending on the company we keep. What matters, though, is how much, how often, and how aware are we of them?

Have you encountered anything super toxic that's not on the list? If so, post them in the comments. I'd love to read them!
