Raise Them Right: 7 Parenting Styles Explored

Published on 13 March 2025 at 10:34

No matter our style of parenting, the goal is the same. To keep them alive. And love them. And if you're lucky teach them to be good people. So...potato potato, when it comes down to it. But it's still fun to talk about the differences and similarities in some of the common parenting styles:

  • Authoritarian Parenting method [because who doesn't love a mini dictator]
    • Pros
      • clear boundaries
      • quick obedience
      • less parental stress
    • Cons
      • stifles independence
      • encourages aggression
      • low self-esteem

  • Permissive Parenting [A.K.A. Let Them Eat All the Cookies method]
    • Pros
      • encourages independence
      • fosters creativity
      • strong parent-child bond
    • Cons
      • lack of boundaries
      • spoiled children
      • difficulty with authority

  • Attachment Parenting method [where love means never sleeping again]
    • Pros
      • secure attachment
      • emotional intelligence
      • better communication
    • Cons
      • overly clingy children
      • difficulty with independence
      • exhausting for parents
  • Positive Discipline [the 'be calm while they destroy the house' method]
    • Pros
      • teaches responsibility
      • encourages self-regulation
      • reduces aggression
    • Cons
      • requires patience
      • needs consistent effort
      • may not work with strong-willed kids

  • Helicopter Parenting [where hovering is an Olympic sport]
    • Pros
      • ensures safety
      • boosts academic success
      • strong parental involvement
    • Cons
      • stunts independence
      • creates anxiety
      • overly dependent sources

  • Free-Range Parenting [opposite of above--A.K.A. 'good luck' kid]
    • Pros
      • Fosters independence
      • encourages self-reliance
      • prepares for adulthood
    • Cons
      • safety concerns
      • lack of supervision
      • potential neglect claims

  • Montessori Method [fancy name for lots of wooden toys]
    • Pros
      • encourages self-directed learning
      • fosters curiosity
      • develops practical skills
    • Cons
      • requires specialized training
      • can be expensive
      • may not suit all learning styles

Which one is your parenting style? Are you one only or are you a mix of a couple? Drop your style in the comments, it'll be fun! I'm maybe attachment parenting, combined with a little bit of helicopter. But not really. Maybe just attachment, ha. Hope you learned something new in this about someone important to you.

Thanks for stopping by! Until next time...
