Gnome Life: Secrets From Under The Garden

Published on 10 March 2025 at 00:23

I figure you can't have a website, store, and blog series (or two 😂) based on gnomes without giving some gnome-based facts. It's good to know what their story is, where they come from, what keeps them going. Am I right?! It's at least cute. Take a look--I bet you didn't know some of this stuff!

Their origin...

The origin of the gnome as a whole is Germany. They are/were called "Kleinleute," which means 'little people."

Their favorite time to play...

Gnomes are nocturnal creatures. They like to play and cause trouble overnight. I can attest to this one, because they don't even move during the day at my house. If you were over, you'd never know they moved at all--until the morning when we wake up!

Their size...

Gnomes are typically 2-3 feet tall, which makes for a perfect shelf squad, as we learned.

Their job...

The gnomes' number one job is that of garden guardians. You know how you might have to guard the garden from groundhogs, moles, or other animals? Well, it's like that. At night, they both guard the above ground portion, and they engineer tunnels underground for surveillance and combat against intruders.

How long they live...

The gnome lives up to 400 years...which explains their hella long beard growth! Have you ever noticed they're always white, too, the beards?

Their weakness(es)...

They have a love for shiny objects (like a cat), strong cheese (like my husband), and afternoon naps (like me. JK. I wish).

Their relationships...

They often marry around 50 years of age. Their love is slow blooming! Or they're slow to mature. I'm not sure of which. But now that I've thought about it, 50 is 1/8 of their lifespan, so approximately 12.5 years old in human years, if we live to 100. My family does. So anyway, they actually marry pretty young then!

Their favorite food(s)...

Mushrooms (hence all the mushroom house figurines), berries, and pizza!

Their favorite drink...

Coffee and...beer. That's right. I've got a few that like to get drunk every day. Back to the coffee, though, the potent magical brew is what fuels their nocturnal garden guarding.

So what did you think? Any surprises? Any things you already knew? Any things you're still curious about? My AI friend (yes, it's still around) has all the answers for us. Just drop your questions in the comment!

Thanks for stopping by! Until next time...
